Eating Healthy During a Cleanse

March 26th, 2009

fruits & veggiesCleansing is a popular way to help detoxify the body and shed those winter pounds. There are many different types of cleanses designed to support/assist the many organs of elimination, including the liver, kidneys, and colon. Cleanse kits are a convenient option because one box can include all the supplements you need to perform the cleanse.

But what does one eat while cleansing? Generally, the advice is to avoid processed foods and eat mostly whole, raw foods.  Many popular cleansing diets, such as The Fat Flush Plan by Ann Louise Gittleman, and the Detox Diet by Elson M. Haas, also suggest avoiding common food allergens, such as gluten and dairy, to possibly reveal food sensitivities that may contribute to a lack of energy and weight gain. You are assisting the colon by eating easy-to-digest grains and avoiding lactose. Temporarily eliminating common food allergens during a cleanse “lightens the load” on your digestive system, making your cleanse more effective. An allergen-free diet is a healthy diet!

Cross contamination continues to be a concern in a home that is not all gluten free. One particular area that is often forgotten are the jars of peanut butter, jelly, mayo, etc. These jars are easily contaminated by others using regular bread and “double dipping” when spreading these items. It is best to buy these in squeezable containers or keep separate jars for those who are gluten intolerant. Other sources of potential cross-contamination could be cutting boards, counters and toasters.

Typical Symptoms of Celiac Disease are abdominal cramping and diarrhea, along with unexplained weight loss and anemia. Up to 30% of patients with Celiac Disease (gluten sensitive enteropathy) do not have these typical symptoms. Some unexplained symptoms to consider as possible Celiac Disease are fatigue, liver test abnormalities, weight gain, joint and muscle pains, nausea, vitamin and calcium deficiency and even constipation. Because of the variety of symptoms and the difficulty recognizing these signs, this condition especially in young women is often missed. In a Mayo clinic study the average time between the onset of one of the symptoms to establishing the diagnosis of Celiac Disease was noted to be about seven years.

The public and the providers need to have a high level of awareness and be vigilant, especially in young women with any unexplained symptoms to identify celiac disease early. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment is critical in avoiding serious complications that could result if left undiagnosed for a long period of time. These long term complications include osteoporosis, bleeding disorders, liver failure, and occasionally development of small bowel lymphoma.
