Food Safety: Another Advantage of Knowing Where Our Food Comes From

February 26th, 2009

The massive peanut recall by the Peanut Corporation of America has affected even parts of the natural food industry, including Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s private label products, and Clif and Luna Bars. The situation has left consumers with questions about how to ensure the safety of their food. When a product that comes from one factory can affect thousands of people across the country, the supply chain is inherently unsafe. One way to address food safety is by re-examining the supply chain.  As consumers we can do that by finding out where our food comes from. At Meadowsweet Market and juniperfoods, you can enlist the help of our trained staff. Whether your question is about food allergens or origins, we can assist you in getting the information you need to make safe food choices.

Our pick for safest nut butters around? Eastwind Nut Butters does not source their products from the Peanut Corporation of America http://www.eastwindnutbutters.com/safe.shtml.  You can pick up their products at Meadowsweet Market.

For those who can’t have peanuts, Earth Balance Almond Butter is a great peanut alternative available at juniperfoods.com  Earth Balance Nut Butter

I recently represented Meadosweet Market at the Northern Plains Sustainable Agricullture conference and was encouraged by the growing selection of natural and organically grown local foods that are available to us here in South Dakota. Local foods eliminate the need for mass distribution of foods, which makes for a safer supply chain. Meadosweet Market will continue to expand its selection of local products to offer you the safest, best quality food choices around.

Cod Liver Oil: Heart Healthy Wintertime Supplement

February 19th, 2009

Cod Liver OilAs we continue to celebrate heart health month at Meadowsweet Market, heart healthy supplements abound. The traditional Midwestern US winter supplement of Cod Liver Oil remains a smart choice for heart health all year round. Cod Liver Oil provides omega-3 fatty acids that help support healthy cholesterol levels. In addition, Cod Liver Oil naturally contains vitamin D3. It’s like getting two great winter supplements in one bottle!

Still, for many people, the mention of Cod Liver Oil brings up childhood memories of terrible tasting liquids. We like to recommend Carlson Cod Liver Oil for these folks. This is not you grandmother’s Cod Liver Oil. It has a pleasant natural lemon flavor and the serving size is just one teaspoon per day. It is also offered in capsule form.

With all the buzz about omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D3 in the news, consider choosing one easy to take supplement that will provide you with both. Your heart will thank you for it!

Carlson Norweigen Cod Liver Oil is on sale this month at Meadowsweet Market,  click here to see our Sales Flyer for great deals on other heart healthy supplements.

Celiac Disease can be treated or have reduced symptoms by using one of the following:

1.       Avoid gluten as much as possible with the help of Dietitian who specializes in Celiac Disease.

2.       Work closely with Health Food stores in making sure you get products that are Gluten Free.

3.      In difficult situations, certain medications have proven to be useful.  Ask your physician who specializes in Celiac Disease if this is an option for you.

4.       Work closely with a physician who is knowledgeable in the complications that can come from Celiac Disease, examples would be osteoporosis, and rare development of small bowel lymphoma.
