Gluten is a type of protein found in common grains like wheat, barley, rye and oats. It is also essential to remember that any foods or beverages that are products of wheat, barley, rye and oats will contain gluten and need to also be eliminated. These would include malt or malt flavoring, malt vinegar, triticale, durum, graham, kamut, semolina and spelt. Celiac disease is one of the top ten missed diagnoses in gastro-intestinal symptoms (Reader’s Digest, August 2007). Several symptoms, not only diarrhea or abdominal bloating, can be part or totally from celiac disease. This includes muscle pains, fatigue, insomnia, etc. The European, and especially the Scandinavian, population is highly susceptible to celiac disease than any other population. I would encourage anyone with any vague symptoms including “Fibromyalgia,” or non-specific muscle or body aches to be tested for celiac disease. If you have celiac disease it is important to receive appropriate treatment with a team consisting of a gastroenterologist and a nutritionist who is specialized in such disorders, which takes time and experience.
